Letter from the Secretary-General

Dear delegates,

It is my honor and pleasure to invite you all to the National Taiwan University’s 2012 High School Model United Nations. I am Wendy, the Secretary-General of HSMUN 2012. I am currently a sophomore in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. I became a member of the Model United Nations Society in Nation Taiwan University when I was a freshman and an officer of the Public Relations Division of NTUMUN in my second year. My passion lies in learning foreign languages and discussing international issues. I also love meeting new people and experiencing new things which make my life full of fun and challenges.

If you look closely at the photos taken at 2009 HSMUN, you just might find that me in those photos, so not so long ago I was just like you. That experience was how I was first introduced to the MUN world, which made me feel both curious and anxious. In fact, I learned a lot during 2009 HSMUN: not only gaining conference skills and the MUN-related experiences, but also the passionate attitude towards life. You can see how actively people dedicate themselves in the conference to solving the problems they may be faced with. When I was in the conference room, I didn’t dare speak, not until the chair called on me to give a speech. I tried to devote myself into the discussions, but it was so hard for me to keep up with the fast-paced and fierce debates. But I learned a lesson during those times: whether your English is good or not, you must have confidence in yourself and try your best to participate in the conference. Other than the conference, I also experienced exciting activities through the week and participated in a fantastic soiree. Since then, I have made up my mind become a dedicated member of the MUN world. Therefore, after I was accepted into the university, I decided to join NTUMUN because I was fascinated and astonished by the well-organized lectures given by the senior members. Up till now, I have served as a delegate in Taipei MUN 2011 and Harvard’s World MUN 2012, staff of the club, as well as becoming the Deputy Secretary-General for Pan Asia MUN 2012.These MUN events have really broadened my horizons and made my college life an unforgettable experience.

At HSMUN this year, you will be offered a national level of English and conference skill training sessions, interesting and exciting activities, which will challenge your abilities, and an amazing soiree. You will also gain new perspectives and make new friends from all the corners of Taiwan. These distinguished people and memories will be your most precious treasures for the rest of your life. It is our deepest hope that your MUN path is not limited to these four days but become a lifelong experience. Hence, we have worked tirelessly to create the most unforgettable MUN experience for you. See you in July, and maybe even next year!

Sincerely yours,
HSMUN 2012

Events and Activities of the Conference

Model United Nations Conference Sessions

The highlights of the HSMUN conference are the sessions themselves. Delegates will be able to represent different countries and discuss the world’s greatest problems. Not only are you able to experience what it is like to be a diplomat, but also become part of the decision making process of many of the resolutions to be passed, with this come the challenges of debating and negotiating with many of the other delegates. But do you remember to prepare beforehand, to become one of the leaders of these sessions.

United Nations Introduction and History

Do you understand what the world’s largest multinational organization? Or do you have a few questions about the United Nations? Maybe you wish to know the origins of the UN and the main goal of this organization? What is the UN doing around the world now? We will be providing an introductory session for you, thus allowing you to truly understand the UN and become a better diplomat during the sessions!

English Training Session

During these sessions, delegates will have to communicate their ideas to everyone else in English, and to most of these delegates, this is probably the first time they must participate in a formal session in English. So are you becoming nervous already? Don’t fret! We’ve prepared a bunch of English training sessions and exercises to help you be ready for the sessions.

Rules of Procedure Introduction

Within the Model United Nations sessions, there are a set of rules known as Rules of Procedure (ROP) to ensure that the conference sessions proceed smoothly. After providing an introduction to these rules, to ensure that the delegates understand how to proceed in sessions, we have prepared an exercise to help you get used to these rules. At the same time, we’ll also be teaching you how to write Draft Resolutions (DR), thus allowing you all to put your ideas on paper!

Real Life Role Play Game

Let’s take a break from all those sessions and play a game of real life RPG. We have created a whole series of games throughout the NTU campus, where you are your teammates can get to know each other as well as the MUN team, as well as the NTU campus just a little bit better. So are you ready?

Ballroom dancing

To any diplomat, a ballroom scene is a normal occasion.
To a MUNer, to attend a soiree, is to dance.
Do you wish to become the centre of everyone’s attention? Then you shall learn just how to do so through our ballroom tutoring.
We have hired a ballroom instructor, to teach everyone the basics they’ll need to become a master of ballroom dancing.

World Trade Game

When you’re country is low on resources, and there is no more time. Everyone is shouting to get hold of each other’s’ resources, are you calm enough to find a solution?
When you are pressured by so many other nations to make a decision, but with the wrong step, your country may collapse, are you able to find a compromise with your friends or foes?
In this organized chaos of a game, can you come out on top?
The World Trade Game is the diplomat’s game of strategy, where your wisdom, wits, and negotiating skills are put to the test.
Do you have what it takes to be the next superpower?

Soiree

With the intense debates going on during the day, one cannot miss out of the amazing soiree that we have prepared for the delegates. With the gentlemen in suits, and the ladies in dresses, all the delegates may enjoy a night full of performances, an exquisite banquet and to truly experience a night as an ambassador. So don’t be shy, court a partner, and dance away into the night!

Group Presentation

In those four amazing days, each group will work together as one, and prepare a stunning performance for everyone else. On the last day, every group will have a chance to go on stage, and show all the delegates, the  talent, inspiration and creativity of their own group!
